Although a few companies would like you to believe their
products are made from all-natural or botanical ingredients.
All-natural or botanical personal lubricants do not exist for
mass distribution.

A few reasons:

1) "Botanical" means made from root, leaf, stem or fruit.
"Natural" usually means found in nature. Such ingredients
in a pure form are not available in commercial quantities.

2) Products made up of all-natural or botanical ingredients
would only have a shelf life of 24 hours or less before the
growth of bacteria or fungi might occur.

Is the consumer protected against the use of toxic
ingredients in personal lubricants?

I read on the O' My Personal Lubricant web site that the ingredients
Methyl and Propyl Paraben contained in most personal lubricant
formulations are toxic.

Yes. You are protected by Product Safety Canada and the guidelines
set forth in the Canadian "Food and Drug Act".

In Canada, the mandates of Health Canada's Cosmetics Program
and Medical Safety Devices Program mandates protect the health
of Canadians by minimizing the risk associated with the use of
cosmetics and medical devices marketed in Canada. These
programs not only outline the requirements for the manufacturer
with regard to the labeling, distribution and sale of personal
lubricant products and safety devices, but also evaluate their
compliance.

In the United States, the mandates of the Food & Drug
Administration are very similar.

O' My Personal Lubricant uses an alternative chemical which
is also a synthetic antimicrobial called Sodium Benzoate.

Sodium Benzoate contains the same portion of the active ingredient
"Benozoate" as found in Methyl Paraben and Propyl Paraben. Although
this company would like you to believe these ingredients are TOXIC,
it is a ploy to further promote their own brand. These ingredients
are no more toxic than Sodium Benozoate and it too is not a toxic
ingredient.
